Tensions flared between Jose Berrios of the Toronto Blue Jays and Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. The issue began when Berrios believed Raleigh had been signaling to his teammates about what pitches were coming while on base, an action Berrios considered unfair.
The situation escalated when Raleigh hit a double off Berrios in an inning, prompting a heated exchange between the two after the inning ended. Berrios clearly voiced his frustration with Raleigh, leading to teammates needing to hold them back to avoid physical confrontation.
After the game, Berrios explained why he reacted so strongly. He stated, “I don’t usually react like this, I’m a quiet and composed guy. But when someone is trying to cheat us on the field, I can’t accept that. I don’t respect that kind of behavior.”

Meanwhile, Raleigh denied ever stealing signs and argued that it’s part of the competitive nature of the game. He shared, “I want my pitchers to do the same if they feel like they’re being tricked. This is a competitive game, and if someone thinks they’re being deceived, they should speak up.”
Berrios’ manager, John Schneider, explained that sign stealing, when done legally, is a normal part of baseball. He said, “Teams do it. We get it. Things can get a little heated in the moment, but there’s no need to escalate things. I like when our guys stand up for each other.”
While tensions ran high, there were no physical altercations. In the end, the Mariners defeated the Blue Jays 8-4. Raleigh had an impressive performance, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, 1 run scored, and 3 walks.
Berrios, on the other hand, completed 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 walks, and 3 earned runs.
